WHALE AMBER
Amber, also known as ambergris or spermaceti in reference to the sperm whale (cachalot), is a digestive by-product formed in the intestines of a particular species of whale. It is still not fully understood whether this substance occurs naturally or as a result of a pathological process. Expelled from the body through defecation, its dark coloration comes from the whale’s favorite food—squid—therefore varying depending on how much of it the animal has consumed.
Ambergris is collected from the sea when it washes ashore, or it may be intentionally deposited by whales near islands in the open ocean. While it is primarily found floating in the waters of the great oceans, the fragments that reach island coastlines are gathered from these shores. Today, it is most commonly found around the Bahamas.
The most important component within ambergris is ambrein, which constitutes about 45–75% of its composition. Ambergris’ characteristic scent is derived from the structural arrangement of the building blocks of ambrein. Synthetic amber has been produced using this compound. Due to similarities in chemical properties, certain substances such as liquid amber orientalis (storax oil / sığla yağı) and musk ambrette oil (abelmoschus moschatus) have also been given the name “amber.” For this reason, synthetically produced ambers display a wide range of olfactory profiles.
As ambergris floats in the sea, it hardens and its color lightens. Its initially harsh and unpleasant odor softens over time, developing into a warm and attractive fragrance. It melts easily when heated or dissolved in alcohol. Because it is extremely rare, ambergris has always carried significant commercial value. Historically, it was used as a treatment for certain age-related ailments and consumed as an aphrodisiac.
Its most widespread use, however, has always been in perfumery. Since ancient times, ambergris has been utilized in incense, creams, and ointments. Beyond its use in food, drink, and perfumery, it has also been employed in prayer bead making and jewelry production due to its unique and appealing scent.
